I’m a journalist and gardener from Dublin – and I have killed more plants than you have.
So why should you follow me? Well, I make lots of mistakes so you don’t have to. Then I tell you how to do the exact opposite.
Gardening, you see, isn’t very sexy. In the media, it has a bit of an image crisis. It’s all wellies and pruning roses and knowing the Latin name for everything. It’s a bit exclusionary and posh. But I don’t believe in having greenfingers and I don’t think you need a degree in horticulture to try your hand at growing food. That is a skill we all deserve to cultivate.
I began gardening in 2012 and I knew nothing about plants, but over the years I have learned through trial and error how to grow most of my own veggies – and I’ve had a wild ride along the way.
I have an allotment in Malahide, North County Dublin, I grow fruits and vegetables, get stung by a lot of nettles and generally make a show of myself in front of the other plot holders. I can usually be found in wildly inappropriate clothing and singing Donna Summer tunes at the top of my voice while my neighbours look on horrified.

About my allotment
My allotment is 200 square metres. This year, I decided to take on the plot beside mine as it was abandoned. So now I have a whole new mess to deal with. I now have two polytunnels, two sheds and twice as many weeds. I have ten large raised beds, a herb garden, and a big old messy corner – no allotment is complete without one.
I grow organic food, I don’t use chemicals in my garden and try to encourage biodiversity and wildlife in my garden.
